The True Reason Gas Prices are Falling (Hint: It’s Not Because of Green Energy)
The True Reason Gas Prices are Falling (Hint: It’s Not Because of Green Energy)
Stephen Moore / October 26, 2014
American workers and motorists got some badly-needed relief this week when the price of oil plunged to its lowest level in years. The oil price has fallen by about 20 to 25 percent since its peak back in June of $105 a barrel. This is translating to lower prices at the pump with many states now below $3 a gallon.
Already the lower oil and gas prices are the equivalent of a $70 to 200 billion cost saving to American consumers and businesses. That’s $70 to 200 billion a year we don’t have to send to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and other foreign nations. Now that’s an economic stimulus par excellence.
There are many global reasons why gas prices are falling, but the major one isn’t being widely reported. America has become in the last several years an energy-producing powerhouse. And sorry, Mr. President, I’m not talking about the niche “green energy” sources you are so weirdly fixated with.
Oil prices are falling because of changes in world supply and world demand. Demand has slowed because Europe is an economic wreck. But over the last five years since 2008 the U.S. has increased our domestic supply by a gigantic 50 percent.
This is a result of the astounding shale oil and gas revolution made possible by made-in-America technologies like hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling. Already thanks to these inventions, the U.S. has become the number one producer of natural gas. But oil production in states like Oklahoma, Texas and North Dakota has doubled in just six years.
Without this energy blitz, the U.S. economy would barely have recovered from the recession of 2008-09. From the beginning of 2008-13 through the end of 2013 the oil and gas extraction industry created more than 100,000 more jobs on net than all other industries combined while the overall job market shrank by 970,000.
When the radical greens carry around signs saying “No to Fracking,” they couldn’t be promoting a more anti-America message. It would be like Nebraska not growing corn.
We are just skimming the surface of our super-abundant oil and gas resources. New fields have been discovered in Texas and North Dakota that could contain hundreds of years of shale oil and gas supplies.
Here’s another reason to love the oil and gas bonanza in America. It’s breaking the back of OPEC.
Saudi Arabia is deluging the world with oil right now, which is driving the world price relentlessly lower. The Arabs understand — as too few in Washington do — that shale energy boom is no short-term fad. It could make energy cheaper for decades to come.
As American drillers get better at perfecting the technologies of cracking through shale rock to get to the near infinite treasure chest supplies of energy locked inside, we will soon overtake Saudi Arabia as the dominant player in world energy markets.
You can’t have a cartel if the world’s largest producer — America — isn’t a member. OPEC will never again be able to hold the world at knife’s point and create the level of economic turmoil that the Arab members of OPEC engineered in the 1970s with their oil embargo.
And by the way: lower oil prices place increased pressure on Iran’s mullahs to abandon their nuclear program and curb Putin’s capabilities to engage in is there a better way to defund the terrorists who run ISIS or to thwart Putin’s East Europe aggression. than to drive down the price of gas and oil?
Yet the political class still doesn’t get it. As recently as 2012 President Obama declared that “the problem is we use more than 20 percent of the world’s oil and we only have 2 percent of the world’s proven oil reserves.”
Then he continued with his Malthusian nonsense, “Even if we drilled every square inch of this country right now, we’d still have to rely disproportionately on other countries for their oil.”
Apparently, neither he nor his fact checkers have ever been to Texas or North Dakota. And we don’t have 2 percent of the world’s oil. Including estimates of onshore — and offshore resources not yet officially “discovered,” we have ten times more than that the stat quoted by the president – resources sufficient to supply and hundreds of years of oil and gas.
America, in sum, has been richly endowed with a nearly invincible 21st century economic and national security weapon to keep us safe and prosperous. The fall plunge is gas prices is just one visible sign of this supply explosion.
Think of how much bigger this revolution could be if we started building pipelines, repealed the ban on oil exports, expanded drilling on public lands, and stopped trying to punitively tax and regulate the oil and gas industry out of existence.

For much of the last forty years, oil’s periodic price spikes have remained a constant threat to economic growth. Higher consumer energy costs as well as increased industrial production costs weighted on the economy. Now, oil it is one of the primary accelerators; and the new big drag on the economy is politicians who hate despise the carbon-based is industry.

10 Job Interview Questions You Shouldn't Answer
10 Job Interview Questions You Shouldn't Answer
HEATHER HUHMAN, GLASSDOOR
SEP. 19, 2014, 4:36 PM
During job interviews, employers want to learn everything they possibly can about the people they interview. However, sometimes their questions can cross the line and promote discriminatory hiring processes.
There are a number of reasons job seekers should be aware of the types of questions employers can ask during a job interview. For example, in a recent study by Slater and Gordon, 40% of managers avoid hiring younger women to avoid dealing with maternity leave.
Examples like this show how important it is for job seekers to be aware of the questions they can and cannot be asked. Questions about race, age, gender, sexual orientation, and marital status are off limits during the interview process.
To avoid becoming a victim of discrimination during a job interview, here are 10 interview questions you don't have to answer:
1. Are you married?
Employers cannot ask questions about your marital status. Although an employer might ask this question to learn more about your time commitment, they cannot find out whether you're married or single.
2. Do you have children? If not, do you plan on it?
Again, employers tend to ask this question to find out about your availability at work. As stated in the study mentioned earlier, employers will (wrongly) use children as a determining factor of whether they hire a candidate or not.
3. How old are you?
Age discrimination is a huge problem job seekers face during the hiring process. Employers cannot ask you about your age, how long you've been in the workforce, or the year you were born.
4. What religion do you practice and religious holidays do you observe?
Employers may want to ask you about your religious practices to learn about your lifestyle and schedule outside of work. However, they legally cannot ask about your religious background.
Employers can ask you if you could work on Sundays or a particular holiday, but they cannot ask any question that reveals your religious beliefs.
5. Do you have any outstanding debt?
Employers cannot hold your credit history against your ability to perform in the workplace. When employers want to learn about your debt, they must ask for permission before obtaining a credit check.
6. Have you ever been arrested?
Employers cannot ask you if you've ever been arrested, but they can ask you if you've been convicted of a crime.
7. What country are you originally from?
If you speak with an accent, employers might want to ask where you're from. Although this might seem like an innocent question, it is illegal because it's asking about your national origin.
8. When was the last time you used an illegal drug?
Employers cannot ask about your illegal drug use history, but they can ask if you currently use illegal drugs.
9. Do you enjoy drinking socially?
Employers cannot ask about your drinking habits during a job interview. This question violates the Americans with Disabilities Act.
10. Do you live nearby?
Employers may want to ask about where you live to determine the length of your commute and availability. However, employers cannot use location to discriminate against you during the hiring process. They can only ask you if you're willing to relocate for the position.
Have you been faced with one of these questions during a job interview?

How to make your life better? All you need is email.

How to make your life better? All you need is email.
I’ve covered a lot of research on how to make your life better but many people struggle with implementing changes because it seems like a major undertaking. It doesn’t have to be.
MORETerror Talks: Kerry Swoops Into Iraq to Spur Action on ISIS NBC News'God Help Me': Bodies of Five Children Found in Alabama NBC NewsWhere's Rick Perry? Who Else Got Booked With the Gov NBC NewsApple Officially Announces iPhone 6 Huffington PostWhat Happened When A Biracial Woman Was Photoshopped In 18 Different CountriesHuffington Post
You can make strides in 5 fundamental areas by just sending 5 emails.
HAPPINESS
Every morning send a friend, family member or co-worker an email to say thanks for something.
Might sound silly but it’s actually excellent advice on how to make your life better.
There’s tons and tons and tons of research showing that over time, this alone – one silly email a day – can make you happier.
This is why I often ask managers to write an e-mail of praise or thanks to a friend, family member, or colleague each morning before they start their day’s work—not just because it contributes to their own happiness, but because it very literally cements a relationship.
At the end of the week, send your boss an email and sum up what you’ve accomplished.
They probably have no idea what you’re doing with your time. They’re busy. They have their own problems.
For your boss, this let’s them know what you’ve been up to without having to ask and saves them from wondering and worrying. They’ll appreciate it and probably come to rely on it.
For you, it’s proactive and shows off your efforts, whichStanford professor Jeffrey Pfeffer says is the key to success in any organization:
…you should make sure that your performance is visible to your boss and your accomplishments are visible. Your superiors in the organization have their own jobs, are managing their own careers, are busy human beings. And you should not assume that they’re spending all their time thinking about you and worrying about you and your career.
Once a week email a potential mentor.
Doesn’t have to be related to your job. Who do you admire that you could learn from?
As I’ve blogged about before, mentors are key to success.
Via The Genius in All of Us: New Insights into Genetics, Talent, and IQ:
Any person lucky enough to have had one great teacher who inspired, advised, critiqued, and had endless faith in her student’s ability will tell you what a difference that person has made in her life. “Most students who become interested in an academic subject do so because they have met a teacher who was able to pique their interest,” write Csikszentmihályi, Rathunde, and Whalen. It is yet another great irony of the giftedness myth: in the final analysis, the true road to success lies not in a person’s molecular structure, but in his developing the most productive attitudes and identifying magnificent external resources.
This is one of those things everyone seems to know but nobody does anything about.
It’s the age of the internet, folks. If you have Google and half an ounce of resourcefulness it’s not that hard to find almost anyone’s email address. If they have a website, their email is probably listed on it.
What do you write? Try Adam’s method or Tim’s method orRamit’s method.
Email a good friend and make plans.
What does research say keeps friendships alive? Staying in touch every 2 weeks.
Got 14 friends? Then you need to be emailing somebody every day.
And what should you email them about? Make plans to get together.
Research shows the best use of electronic communication is to facilitate face-to-face interaction:
The results were unequivocal. “The greater the proportion of face-to-face interactions, the less lonely you are,” he says. “The greater the proportion of online interactions, the lonelier you are.” Surely, I suggest to Cacioppo, this means that Facebook and the like inevitably make people lonelier. He disagrees.Facebook is merely a tool, he says, and like any tool, its effectiveness will depend on its user. “If you use Facebook to increase face-to-face contact,” he says, “it increases social capital.” So if social media let you organize a game of football among your friends, that’s healthy. If you turn to social media instead of playing football, however, that’s unhealthy.
(More on improving friendships here.)
CAREER
Send an email to someone you know (but don’t know very well) and check in.
These “weak ties” are the primary source of future career opportunities.
From Charles Duhigg’s excellent book The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business:
In fact, in landing a job, Granovetter discovered, weak-tie acquaintances were often more important than strong-tie friends because weak ties give us access to social networks where we don’t otherwise belong. Many of the people Granovetter studied had learned about new job opportunities through weak ties, rather than from close friends, which makes sense because we talk to our closest friends all the time, or work alongside them or read the same blogs. By the time they have heard about a new opportunity, we probably know about it, as well. On the other hand, our weak-tie acquaintances— the people we bump into every six months— are the ones who tell us about jobs we would otherwise never hear about.
“But I don’t know what to say.” Do any little thing that benefits them, not you. Try Adam Rifkin’s 5 minute favor.
Or just send them a link they might find useful.
Still stuck? Okay, send them the link to the post you’re reading right now.
If this has helped you with how to make your life better it can probably help them too. ;)

Hackers transform a smartphone gyroscope into an always-on microphone
Apps that use your smartphone's microphone need to ask permission, but the motion sensors? No say-so needed. That might not sound like a big deal, but security researchers from Stanford University and defense firm Rafael have discovered a way to turn Android phone gyroscopes into crude microphones. They call their app "Gyrophone" and here's how it works: the tiny gyros in your phone that measure orientation do so using vibrating pressure plates. As it turns out, they can also pick up air vibrations from sounds, and many Android devices can do it in the 80 to 250 hertz range -- exactly the frequency of a human voice.
By contrast, the iPhone's sensor only uses frequencies below 100Hz, and is therefore useless for tapping conversations. Though the researchers' system can only pick up the odd word or the speaker's gender, they said that voice recognition experts could no doubt make it work better. They'll be delivering a paper next week at the Usenix Security conference, but luckily, Google is already up on the research. "This early, academic work should allow us to provide defenses before there is any likelihood of real exploitation."

The LUNA RING, our lunar solar power generation concept, translates this dream into reality through ingenious ideas coupled with advanced space technologies.
Virtually inexhaustible, nonpolluting solar energy is the ultimate source of green energy that brings prosperity to nature as well as our lives.
Shimizu Corporation proposes The LUNA RING for the infinite coexistence of mankind and the Earth.
How Lunar Solar Energy Reaches the Earth
Transmitting Energy from the Moon to the Earth
The Solar Belt Made from Lunar Resources -Constructing a lunar solar power plant-
Exploiting Lunar Resources
Lunar resources will be used to the fullest extent possible in constructing the Solar Belt.
Water can be produced by reducing lunar soil with hydrogen that is imported from the Earth. Cementing material can also be extracted from lunar resources. These materials will be mixed with lunar soil and gravel to make concrete. Bricks, glass fibers and other structural materials can also be produced by solar-heat treatments.
Robotic Construction
Robots will play a vital role in construction on the lunar surface. They will be tele-operated 24 hours a day from the Earth.

IBM has developed a computer chip which it says will function like a human brain in a giant step forward for artificial intelligence.
TrueNorth is being hailed as the world’s first neurosynaptic computer chip because it can figure things out on its own.
The chip also has one million ‘neurons’ and could cram the same power as a super computer into a circuit the size of a postage stamp.
IBM's TrueNorth processor could enable a wide variety of applications based on the human brain's computing power. For instance, it could help assist vision-impaired people to navigate through an environment
Experts said that it was as big an advance as the advent of supercomputers in the 1980.
Horst Simon, deputy director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, told the New York Times: ‘It is a remarkable achievement in terms of scalability and low power consumption’.
Modern processors have some 1.4 billion transistors and consume up to 140 watts but the IBM chip contains 5.4 billion transistors and uses just 70 milliwatts of power, meaning it is incredibly efficient.
TrueNorth will use closely interconnected ‘neurons’ just like the brain does meaning that it can work proactively to a level not seen before.
In addition to the one million ‘neurons’ it has 256 million programmable synapses, the most IBM has ever put in a chip.

The human brain has 100 billion neurons and up to 150 trillion synapses but IBM principal investigator and senior manager Dharmendra Modha told CNET.com that it could still perform a wide variety of tasks.
WHAT IS TRUENORTH?

He said that TrueNorth could be used to monitor oil spills or issue tsunami alerts on its own without the need for a human to keep track of things.
Richard Doherty, the research director of tech research firm Envisioneering Group, said that IBM's chip was a ‘really big deal’.
He said that if a robot today was walking towards a pillar then it needed a huge amount of computing to stop it heading into it.
But a robot using TrueNorth would be able to sense it and change direction just as a human can.
Computers are now approaching the stage where they are considered ‘smarter’ than humans in many ways.
Earlier this year a computer programme passed the Turing Test for the first time, which is seen as a milestone in artificial technology.
The programme, which mimicked a 13-year-old boy, was mistaken for a human more than 40 per cent of the time during a series of five-minute keyboard conversations with a real person.
Films like The Terminator have played on our fears about such technology - in the classic sci-fi thriller a computer system becomes self aware and launches nuclear strikes in an attempt to wipe out humanity, leading to a war between man and machines.
Ironically IBM’s cognitive computing programme is called SyNapse, which is similar to Skynet, the computer system in The Terminator.
