The Best Thing You Can Do for Your Career This Weekend
July 02, 2013
Sit back and relax.
No, really!
OK, there's one more part to that equation: Sit back, relax, and let your mind wander — about your career.
Think about it: How often do you take time out to reflect on your career? Sure, you probably often think about your position, your co-workers, maybe even the job you want next. But what about your broader career goals and aspirations?
If you're like most, probably not very often (after all, there are a few other things competing for our time and attention). That said, reflection is an incredibly important part of having the career and life that you want.
So, this weekend, you have my permission to take some time out for yourself at the park, on your patio, or at your favorite vacation spot. Once you're there, and let yourself daydream about where your career might take you — three, five, even 10 years from now. Let your mind roam and think about all the possibilities: Do you want to head up your department? Have a leadership role at another company? Work in fashion, sports, or healthcare? Start your own business someday?
Don't necessarily think about what might be possible given your current skill set, experience, or situation—remember, this time is for dreaming, not for planning, and you'll want to give yourself time to really just daydream.
But, if you want to take this one step further, come up with one thing you can do in the next month that will get you a tiny bit closer to your goal. Whether you sign up for a class, set a meeting with your boss, or research new companies you'd love to work for on The Muse or another career site, you'll be that much closer to a career of your dreams.
