4 Ways to Have Fun With Rude Bill Collectors

4 Ways to Have Fun With Rude Bill Collectors

Collectors break federal law daily by abusing and threatening people who are behind on their bills.

There is nothing wrong with pushing back as long as you stay within your legal rights. The good news is that if you do so, you can even have a little fun with it. Remember, the time to do this is when the collector is being rude. Here are some ideas:
1. Make them wait.

Tell them if they continue to be impolite, you’ll place them on hold. This involves placing the telephone next to a speaker that is playing blaring music. Wait a minute or two then pick the phone back up. If they have calmed down, continue to talk to them. If not, place them on hold again.

2. Limit the number of times you speak with them.

Once a week is a good number to aim for. If they insist on calling more frequently than that—and they will—figure out a fun way to handle those excess calls. You can simply hang up, talk to them in a foreign accent, or take the phone away from your mouth every 10 seconds to yell like you are cheering on your favorite sports team.
3. Pass the phone back and forth.

This is a great way to have a laugh with your husband or wife. If the collector starts yelling, tell them that your spouse wants to talk to them and put the other person on the phone. If the collector starts yelling again, repeat the process. Pretty soon, the collector will either calm down or get so frustrated that they will hang up.
4. Send them a copy of your budget.

It is best if you can do it by email. If a collector starts harassing you, tell them that you have made your budget for the month and you cannot send them any more money than you already have. Offer to email the budget to them. Every time they call back and start griping at you, hit the send button again. The numbers will speak for themselves.

All these suggestions are for keeping the emotions in check, not getting out of paying the money you owe. The point is to keep the situation calm, pay your bill, then stay out of debt so you don’t face this situation again and again.
